Short analysis of YCSRT

1. http://www.e-t-c.com/EHSOpen_Hazmat.asp?t=site

This site contains information related to HAZMAT or hazardous materials. This site also presents info on how to obtain any certification available in Arizona. There are several tiers of certification given, each is discussed in detail on the site.

2. http://www.ycsrt.org/
I thought this would be a great source to analyze and use in my paper on YCSRT. Since Mr. Schmidt is my anatomy teacher, I will gain lots of valuable insight from him as well as the site itself. As for the site, it displays everything a curious visitor would need to know as well as contact info, training, location, and job duties and fulfillment. analysis

YCSRT interview with Assistant Manager Josh Schmidt

Keith Morgan- Questions

1: Briefly tell me what YSRT is and what your role is in that org.

2: Since YCSRT is volunteer, how do you find the resources, funds to help keep equipment updated, and transportation?

3: what's the biggest challenge being a part of YCSRT?

4: I learned the YCSRT works in joint co-op with the Yavapai Sheriff’s office. What do they do to help out YCSRT, or vice versa?

5: What is the basic pre-req. or skill training needed to become a volunteer in YCSRT?

Josh Schmidt- Answers

1.) YCSRT stands for Yavapai County Sheriff's Response team. In Arizona according to Arizona Revised Statues the Sheriff's Department in each county is responsible for all search and rescue activity and missions. YCSRT is a volunteer organization that the Sheriff's Office uses to aid itself in caring out this responsibility. I belong to the backcountry unit. We are responsible for tracking, ground based operation, technical rescue, swift water rescue, air rescue in coordination with the Department of Public Safety, mine and cave rescue and many more things.

2.) Our resources come from a verity of areas. We are responsible for purchasing all of our individual gear. The SO gives us a vehicle and we get the rest of our money through grants and fund raining.

3.) The biggest challenge is time and money. Our entire unit is volunteer, Due to the skills that we perform many of our members are not retired and work for a living. This means that we are not always available to help and have to balance our work schedules with life and rescues.

4.) YCSRT takes care of all search and rescue missions for Yavapai County.

5.) You have to pass a background check, basic academy and have good common sense. In addition each member is required to pass field training that encompasses technical rescue, tracking, medical skills, etc. Many of us have additional certification through the state, Yavapai college etc.

In my interview with Josh Schmidt, Assistant manager of Yavapai County Search and Rescue team, he provided valuable and brief information on the organization itself. Yavapai County search and Rescue is strictly 100% volunteer. Although they don’t have direct or passive income, they do receive government grants from time to time. A lot of equipment is bought by the volunteers themselves. Josh also stated some problems with the organization were being a volunteer. Since the volunteers do not get paid, it is hard for them to find time to volunteer since they have jobs to raise families and keep a roof over their heads.
A lot of YCSRT’s task is emergency rescue and pre hospital care. I chose this organization because it stuck out like a sore thumb. This field has very high appeal to me because I’m very interested in emergency and pre hospital care. Having taken an EMT class myself, it only further piqued my interest to delve deeper into the career path. A lot of skills and requirements not stated by Josh that I think may be helpful that I have knowledge of is WOOFR classes or HAZMAT, the first is a wild land or back country survival/ emergency rescue class. HAZMAT is hazardous materials. In HAZMAT you cover all kinds of dangerous substances and what you do when you come in contact of or arrive in a perimeter of the incident.
Aside from the interview and basic background knowledge I think I may conduct another interview with Josh Schmidt to get further information and quite possibly do a ride along on one of his calls. I may or may not record on video, videotaping it may prove very beneficial to my blog for an excellent visual.

Interview Response Pro 3

During my interview with this wonderful individual, I have learned a new aspect or view on the industry of medicine and health care. The person told me straight up this is what is happening, this is what I think. Like a lot of things, only time can say what will happen. Personally, a lot of Americans are upset or confused as to why this happened. It’s only natural. With the uprising numbers of bankruptcies each year, a large majority can be blamed on healthcare insurance, premiums, surgeries, etc. Barack Obama and congress knew they had a big steak on their plate. Maybe they bit off more than they could chew? A lot of Americans are completely convinced that he is the wrong man for the job. As for the reform itself, there is the other half of America who thinks it’s the best thing that’s happened yet.

Research Proposal (OPT OUT)

For my research project I decided it would be wise to research something in my field of interest. I looked around the net for volunteer organizations and I found one that stuck out like a sore thumb. YCSRT or Yavapai County Search and Rescue. Sounds awesome! From just looking at their website they have posted I learned a lot of juicy facts and FYI. A long with that I also found out my anatomy teacher is the assistant manager of the organization! Yes super awesome and a plus. I scored an interview and now I get to write on something I will actually enjoy researching.
As for the organization, of course it is non profit, all volunteers. Donations are accepted obviously. The tasks set out by the organization; simply search and rescue individuals reported missing on an excursion or leisure jog exclusively in Yavapai County. It is estimated about 1000 people every year go missing in Yavapai County making it quite a busy job for the group of volunteers. They operate 24/7 and are dispatched along with Yavapai County sheriff’s office who works in a joint effort to rescue the lost and help the injured.
The volunteers who make up this task force are highly trained and state certified in their line of work. Aside from the sheriff and his deputies, the task force consists of; tracking, backcountry, mounted, scuba, search dog, quad unit, 4x4, and southern YCSRT. As stated before, the YCSRT is funded only on donations and not by funding of the state. If one was to go about applying to join the task force, they would have to contact the sheriff’s office volunteer services. Their # can be found on their website at http://www.ycsrt.org/ or by email. I think that writing this paper will be fun and exciting to learn about a new facet of the same Field of my interest of medicine and health care. YCSRT essentially the mobile hospital/ rescue team to go.

Annotated Bibliography

"United States: The view from West Virginia; Barack Obama." Pro Quest. The Economist, 07 Mar 2007. Web. 7 Apr 2010. .

This source I chose was picked from the Database at Pro Quest. It is a periodical newspaper article called “The economist”. I found this reading interesting because it discussed Barack Obama’s view on the health care reform and what he and congress had planned to do. Although this article isn’t exactly relevant, it shed some light on the white house and congress at the time and what they were planning. This article also presented some startling statistics. One statistic stated that with the original health care system in place, every 30 seconds bankruptcy occurred because of the expensive and staggering costs of health care. It was projected by the end of 2007 that 1.5 million citizens would lose their homes.

Mahar, Maggie. "Myths and Facts about Health Reform." The Health Care Blog. Google, 05 Apr 2010. Web. 7 Apr 2010. .

This blog had wonderful insight on the health care reform since that is probably the most hotly debated topic in the health care industry right now. It shared many views and opinions from several authors who were highly accredited with degrees. Apart from that, the blog itself was recognized as the best blog on health care by “The Wall Street Journal”. The author Maggie Mahar talked about the rising costs of health care and the newly presented ideas by congress. She presented a scope of five to 10 years on what was going to happen to Medicare in general, regarding insurance premiums and benefits.
It is projected that in the next ten years, Medicare will cut overpayments to Medicare advantage insurers by $138 billion.

"Dire Consequences Predicted if Reform Fails." Health care Financial Management Jul 2009: pg. 12. Web. 7 Apr 2010. < http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=1792321841&sid=1&Fmt=3&clientId=1407&RQT=309&VName=PQD>.
This was a cool periodical magazine, which was posted on Pro quest as well. The author once again was anonymous. In the magazine article it talked about how congress is struggling to face the needs and challenges that lay ahead if strategic action isn’t taken soon. Insurance for employers was said to rise by 106% within the next few years. Large corporations’ even small businesses would easily be hampered by large insurance bills for their employees. Lots of small businesses were said to go out of business if this were to occur.

This is a wiki source found on Wikipedia.com. This source seems to back itself up quite well. It cited many sources at the bottom of the link. As for the information found in the article itself, it showed readers the layout and challenges of the health care reform in the present and future. I myself know this wiki to be very credible, regarding the endless list of citations of the author’s references he used to create this page.

It contains information on why Barack Obama created the health reform. Simply put, wages, salary, or any income during the past decade did not increase as fast as health care premiums. Premiums on health care increased four times as fast as America’s average income.
